Firstly, as I mentioned above, stereotypes help us understand the behavior of others. We gain some background knowledge about other cultures and we are less likely to be badly surprised by the representations of those nations. Secondly, stereotypes help us avoid unpleasant situations. Thanks to them we know what to expect from representatives of other cultures. What is more, they give us general idea about what other nations consider to be offensive.
